These weather events can lead to ground stops being issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, causing congestion and delays at airports. In such situations, flights may have to take longer routes to avoid the bad weather, further extending the travel time for passengers.

To address these challenges, United Airlines is leveraging generative artificial intelligence to provide passengers with real-time updates on flight disruptions. By partnering with FlightAware, a leading flight-tracking platform, the airline can offer passengers access to live radar maps, as well as information on other causes of flight delays, such as mechanical issues or airport congestion. This technology will be put to the test during peak travel periods, like the upcoming July Fourth holiday, when a record number of passengers are expected to fly.

The airline industry has been working towards improving on-time performance, with the goal of reducing the number of delayed flights. In the first half of the year, nearly 942,000 U.S. airline flights arrived late, representing 21.4% of all flights. While this figure is slightly better than the previous year, there is still room for improvement.
